OM: Pope St. Damasus I

Today the liturgy allows for the Optional Memorial of Pope St. Damasus I (305-384).

Of Spanish descent, he summoned synods and councils, notably, the First Council of Constantinople, to defend the Church against schismatics and heretics. He widely promoted the veneration of the martyrs.

It was Damasus who commissioned St. Jerome's translation of the Bible and who changed the liturgical language from Greek to Latin.

Grant, we pray, O Lord, that we may constantly exalt the merits of your Martyrs, whom Pope St. Damasus so venerated and loved.  Through our Lord.

Advent Weekday Collect:

May the splendor of your glory dawn in our hearts, we pray, almighty God, that all shadows of the night may be scattered and we may be shown to be children of light by the advent of your Only Begotten Son.  Who lives and reigns.
