tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3342510778963202601.post4198899195959680032..comments2024-03-28T03:35:07.707-04:00Comments on The Journey of a Bishop: John XXIII's Opening Address to Vatican Council II - Death of Toronto Bishop Roman DanylakArchbishop Terryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14230861090789668276noreply@blogger.comBlogger1125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3342510778963202601.post-60349489791715783562012-10-11T09:23:18.779-04:002012-10-11T09:23:18.779-04:00There is an important omission from this translati...There is an important omission from this translation (which is taken from the Abbott/Gallagher edition of the Vatican II documents).<br /><br />The second last sentence of the section entitled PRINCIPAL DUTY OF THE COUNCIL: THE DEFENSE AND ADVANCEMENT OF TRUTH, reads as follows: "The substance of the ancient doctrine of the deposit of faith is one thing, and the way in which it is presented is another."<br /><br />It should read:"The substance of the ancient doctrine of the deposit of faith is one thing, and the way in which it is presented KEEPING THE SAME MEANING AND SAME JUDGMENT is another."<br /><br />The original Latin :"Est enim aliud ipsum depositum Fidei, seu veritates, quae veneranda doctrina nostra continentur, aliud modus, quo eaedem enuntiantur, eodem tamen sensu eademque sententia."<br /><br />This can be found at http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/john_xxiii/speeches/1962/index_en.htm<br /><br />The Italian translation is correct, but the Spanish translation omits the translation of the Latin "eodem tamen sensu eademque sententia".<br /><br />The omitted part is important because of what the last sentence stresses: "And it is the latter that must be taken into great consideration with patience if necessary, everything being measured in the forms and proportions of a Magisterium which is predominantly pastoral in character."<br /><br />It was the eminent moral theologian, Dr. William E.
