<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; margin: 0px;">At the focal point of the arms is a triple, inlaid eight-pointed star in
the shape of a Greek cross, which recalls the words of Saint Paul in the Letter
to the Philippians: “<span style="margin: 0px;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="background: white; color: black; margin: 0px;">You will shine among them like stars in
the sky, as you hold firmly to the word of life”</span></i><span style="background: white; color: black; margin: 0px;"> (2:15-16).</span></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; margin: 0px;">The threefold star evokes the Church’s faith in the Triune God, as
expressed in the ancient Nicene Creed.<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>Its
cross-like shape alludes to the mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ, the second
Person of the Holy Trinity, while the third inlay represents the Holy Spirit,
Patron of the Azoreans. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>The eight points
of the star refer to Mary, the Mother of God, and to the mystery of the Incarnation.<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>Mary is present as Mother of the Church and Patroness
of Lusitania (<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Terra Mariae</i>), also invoked
since the seventeenth century as “<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Our
Lady of the Bettencourts</i>”.</span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; margin: 0px;">The chevron is the heraldic symbol of Saint Joseph, Patron of the
Universal Church, Patron of Canada and the Archdiocese of Ottawa, as well as the
Archbishop’s namesake.</span></div>

<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; margin: 0px;">A black lion, the symbol of courage, rampant on an argent shield, is from
the arms of the first Bettencourt to be granted this distinction in the later
part of the first millennium. <span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>It is
found among the seventy-two shields in the Hall of the Coats of Arms in the
National Palace of Sintra (Portugal), and appears etched in basalt over the house
of the same name in Angra do Heroismo (Azores).<span style="margin: 0px;">
</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="line-height: normal; margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 35.4pt;">
<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; margin: 0px;">The two lions on the chevron allude to the two branches of the
Bettencourt genealogy united by the marriage of the Archbishop’s parents (Silveira
Bettencourt and Soares Bettencourt).</span></div>

<span lang="EN-GB" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">The Latin motto – FIDES SPES CHARITAS – is drawn from the
conclusion of Saint Paul’s hymn to love in the First Letter to the Corinthians:
<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>“<span style="margin: 0px;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><span style="background: white; margin: 0px;">Now faith,
hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love”</span></i><span style="background: white; margin: 0px;"> (13:13).<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span><span style="margin: 0px;"> </span>The deep red colour of the shield symbolizes
love, strength and faithful service, while the scroll contains the armorial
bearings of four of the various distinctions conferred on Archbishop
Bettencourt: </span></span></span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Commander

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Please see below the English translation of a Latin Decree from Cardinal Piacenza granting the possibility of obtaining a Plenary Indulgence to those participating in the Veneration of the Relic of St. Francis Xavier, including the elderly, the sick and those otherwise impeded from attending but who join themselves to the devotional exercises associated with the Pilgrimage in Canada.</span></div>

order to foster the devotion of the faithful and the salvation of their souls,
the Apostolic Penitentiary, by virtue of the faculties granted to it by
Francis, by Divine Providence the Supreme Pontiff, having considered the recent
request of the Most Reverend Terrence Thomas Prendergast, S.J., Metropolitan
Archbishop of Ottawa, graciously grants from the Church’s treasure in heaven a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Plenary Indulgence</i>, to be gained by the
faithful motivated by true repentance and charity, under the usual conditions
(Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, and Prayer for the intentions
of the Pope), which they may also by way of intercession apply to souls in
purgatory, on condition that they have taken part in the religious exercises
surrounding the Pilgrimage of the Relic of St Francis Xavier, which is to take
place in Canada from 26 December 2017 to 4 February 2018 in large gatherings of
the people, or if they have spent at least a reasonable time in prayerful
contemplation before the relic of the Saint, ending with the Lord’s Prayer, the
Creed and prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Francis Xavier.<span style="margin: 0px;"> </span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large; margin: 0px;"> The elderly, the sick, and any others who for
a serious reason cannot leave their home, can likewise gain a <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Plenary Indulgence</i> upon their
detestation of their sins and with the intention of fulfilling, as soon as
possible, the three usual conditions, provided they have taken part spiritually
in these religious exercises, bringing their prayers and suffering or the
difficulties of their life to God’s mercy.</span><br />

to hear confession should generously offer themselves to celebrate the
Sacrament of Reconciliation.</span></span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span lang="FR" style="margin: 0px;">I got to know Father Latourelle in his old age though I had come to know of his theological brilliance in reading his works during my theological studies. In recent years we would have delightful exchanges at the Jesuit Infirmary in Richelieu, Quebec when I would visit over the Christmas holidays. We hit it off. The following is the necrology (in French only) made available to his Jesuit confreres; it captures some of the character of the man. May the Lord grant him a merciful judgment and the reward of his labours in service to Christ and His Church. RIP</span></div>

</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">

fondamentale</i>,<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"> à Rome. Un glorieux
total de seize ans</i> <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">!</i> <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">J’ai été ordonné prêtre en 1950, à
trente-deux ans, par Mgr Paul-Émile Léger.</i></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span lang="FR" style="font-size: 12pt; margin: 0px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span lang="FR" style="font-size: 12pt; margin: 0px;">Après avoir terminé
sa thèse de doctorat<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">, </i>à l’Université Grégorienne,
</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px;">
la publication <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Jésuites canadiens, </i>alors

<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Loving Choices. Il a également dirigé plusieurs études bibliques
populaires. <br />
<br />
a supervisée pendant quatre ans. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><u>Arrangements funéraires:</u></b> <br />

at René Goupil House, Pickering, ON. He was in his 94th year and in religious
life for 75 years and a priest for 62 years. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Frederick,
the son of Robert B. Power and Georgia A. Tramley, was born in Moncton, NB.
After three years of high school, he followed his older brother John (who died
in 1980) and entered the Society of Jesus at Guelph on July 30, 1942.
Completing his novitiate, he pronounced first vows on July 31, 1944, then did
the usual juniorate studies. In 1946, he went to Toronto and attended the
Jesuit Seminary for philosophy. As a Jesuit scholastic, he taught at Campion
High School, Regina, SK from 1949 to 1952 and returned to Toronto for theology
studies. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Father Power
was ordained on June 19, 1955 in Midland, ON at the Martyrs’ Shrine as that was
an anniversary year at the Shrine, marking 25 years since the canonization of
the Canadian Jesuit Martyrs. Tertianship, his final year of Jesuit formation
followed in 1956 at Cleveland, OH; he pronounced his Final Vows on February 3,
1958.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;"></span>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Fr. Fred
began his life-long apostolate right after tertianship when he was appointed to
the office of the Eucharistic Crusade, a branch of the Apostleship of Prayer.
For the next 56 years, he was totally involved in promoting devotion to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus. He was National Director, Editor and Promoter of the
Apostleship of Prayer, <i>The Messenger of the Sacred Heart</i>, and the Sacred
Heart Program. He wrote and edited extensively. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Fr. Fred
managed all of this on a shoestring budget by putting in long hours of steady
work. He went out to his office on Danforth Avenue, in East Toronto faithfully
for decades, working there with his small but dedicated staff. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Fr. Power
travelled throughout Canada promoting this devotion and was recognized as a
dedicated holy priest fulfilling the mandate given to the Society of Jesus by
the Church. He wrote several books on the Sacred Heart, then published a series
on reading the Old and New Testaments, and later, a 7-part series for the
Jesuit Province IgNation blog called, “Some Thoughts on Praying,” which was
well researched and quite informative. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Community
life was a mainstay for Fr. Fred and he took part in all its activities and
works. Both at Hevey House, the guesthouse on Jarvis St., and at 2 Dale Ave.,
he amazed younger Jesuits with his energetic cleanup of the dishes and pots and
pans after every dinner without fail until his last days in those communities.
A gentleman of the old school, his manner of welcoming young and old to his
community was gracious and warm. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Once Fr. Fred
turned over the responsibilities of his mandate to other hands, he moved
readily in early summer of 2014 to the Jesuit Infirmary at Pickering. He was
appointed chaplain there and regularly oversaw devotions: the Saturday rosary, Benediction
on First Fridays, and other liturgical events. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">Blessed with
good health during his long life, he was in his final years an inspiration to
many at Pickering. The week before he suffered a mild stroke he was seen doing
his daily walk around the property aided by a walker. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">There will
be a visitation on Sunday, November 5, 2017 from 7-9 PM at St. Ignatius Chapel,
Manresa Retreat House, 2325 Liverpool Road, Pickering, ON (with a wake service
at 8 PM).</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 11px;">
<span style="font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%; margin: 0px;">The funeral
liturgy will be celebrated there the next day, Monday, November 6 at 10:30 am
(followed by a reception); burial will be at the Jesuit Cemetery, Guelph, ON,
later that same day at 2:30 PM.</span></div>

</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>

<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
vraiment faim. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</span><br />
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span>
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span lang="FR-CA" style="font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: FR-CA;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
l’an.

The Church traditionally announces the important dates of
the year on Epiphany Sunday. The key one is the solemnity of the Resurrection

Lent’s purpose is to
reorder the lives of the disciples of Jesus where they went astray. The time-honoured
ways to draw nearer to God in Lent are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.<o:p></o:p></div>

The genius of these dependable Christian practices is how
they acknowledge our spiritual and physical natures in our yearning for God.<o:p></o:p></div>

Purposely spending more time in prayer helps us step back
from the pressing demands of busy lives. Then, we can better hear and respond
to God’s quiet voice in the present.<o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
St. Mother Teresa once remarked, “Prayer is not asking.
Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and
listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts.” Being intentional about
listening to God is a basic Lenten practice.<o:p></o:p></div>

Fasting and routinely abstaining from meat are important
aspects of a Catholic’s devotional life. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Catholics are to abstain from meat on
Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. We are to fast (eat only one full meal)
on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This expresses our desire for personal
renewal at the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. We show gratitude for the Lord
Jesus’ gift of his life for us on Fridays, especially Good Friday.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Other traditional acts of “giving up” sweets, alcohol,
tobacco or other pleasures during Lent help us personalize our spirit of
sacrifice. We “turn from sin and believe the Good News.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Fasting isn’t about dieting to shrink our waistline for a
new spring wardrobe! Rather, it is about disciplining ourselves by saying “no”
to things we like—to build up our spiritual will. This strengthens us to avoid other
temptations to wrongdoing.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Fasting also expresses solidarity with our many fellow
humans who go to bed hungry or thirsty each night. The Lenten fast, with its
small hunger twinges, motivates us to help the truly hungry.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Almsgiving or charity is the practice of intentionally
sacrificing a little of our own comfort and lives of abundance. We share with
those who are in genuine need. This is an essential Lenten discipline. Sacrificial
giving releases us from the idolatry of materialism. Our Lord Jesus Christ
tells us that when we clothe the naked, feed the hungry, or assuage the thirst
of another person, we do it to him (Matthew 25:31–41).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Almsgiving flows from saving money by these sacrifices. We
should care especially for the needy near and far. We can take part in our
parish’s social outreach. We can also support the Lenten campaign for the poor
of the world conducted by Development and Peace, founded fifty years ago by the
Bishops of Canada to promote social justice in the Global South. Being
other-centred by purposely giving to charity connects our innate need to help
with our recognition that we are all God’s children.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Finally, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a big part of
our quest for holiness. The Church urges Catholics to make a good confession
each year during the days surrounding Easter. The practice of confession is a major
impetus to spiritual growth.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ultimately, Lent is the Church’s gift to Christians, not a
seasonal punishment. It helps us prepare more worthily and joyfully to
celebrate the most profound moment in our personal life and the history of the
cosmos—the Passion, Death and, Resurrection of Jesus Christ!</div>

year, another kind of death has been legally available in Canada. Euphemistically
called “medical aid in dying,” it is in fact assisted suicide or euthanasia. However,
the permission now granted by law to take one’s life or allow another to assist
in terminating does not change God’s moral law, which forbids such practices.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

person by action or omission with the claimed purpose of eliminating suffering.
“Action” includes lethal injection and other methods of directly causing death.
“Omission” includes withholding medically indicated treatment or nutrition. As
a direct and intentional termination of human life, it is immoral and not
permissible.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN-CA; mso-bidi-font-style: italic;">Here is an important distinction. A patient
may request not to have treatment or to withdraw treatment when the burdens it
brings outweigh any benefits. A doctor may honour this. These decisions are
acceptable from a moral viewpoint. Also, medication may be administered to
relieve pain and suffering, even when it might shorten the patient’s life. On
the condition that this medication is given solely to relieve pain, and not
